Research Area: Wetland Regional Monitoring
Wetlands and riparian habitat are a valuable part of California's natural environment. They provide wildlife habitat, recreational value, and a variety of ecosystem services. However, California has experienced a great loss of these habitats compared to historical conditions. The federal government and the State of California have expressed goals to curtail these wetland losses and increase wetland extent over time. To overcome the jurisdictional and bureaucratic challenges of conserving wetlands in California, the Southern California Wetlands Recovery Project (WRP) was established in 1997, by 17 federal and state wetland management agencies.
SCCWRP Research
SCCWRP has worked collaboratively with the WRP to develop a regional wetland monitoring and assessment program for southern California (IWRAP). SCCWRP has also collaborated with partners at the state level to develop standardized assessment tools. A variety of additional projects have also been undertaken to demonstrate the use of these tools in assessing the status and changes in California's wetland and riparian habitat.
