Research Theme: Contaminants
Human activity greatly elevates the level of chemical contaminants in the environment. Population growth and subsequent land conversion/development over the past 150 years has introduced large quantities of a diverse array of contaminants into coastal systems via point sources, surface runoff, and the atmosphere. Over time, the buildup of certain contaminants can have harmful effects on marine organisms, and lead to unhealthy freshwater and marine ecosystems.
SCCWRP Research
SCCWRP's contaminant research aims to increase understanding of the sources, occurrence, fates, and effects of contaminants in southern California’s marine and aquatic environments. Collectively, this effort is geared toward producing a comprehensive picture of the impact of contaminants in southern California.
